Midsummer is an occasion of large gatherings and a feast to fulfill your social obligations. It is an occasion with a certain nostalgia and pretty much all Swedes have an idea on what it should be like and how it should proceed. The main celebrations on the Friday include traditional events such as raising and dancing around the Maypole listening to traditional music. Some also wear traditional folk costumes and crowns made of wild sprigs and wildflowers. At the dinner table you find the year’s first potatoes, pickled herring, chives, sour cream and hopefully also the first Swedish strawberries of the season, accompanied by cold beer and snaps, the latter enjoyed with a drinking song.
